Betty Marie Johnson

          Betty Marie Johnson, 87, of Taneytown, MD died peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Lorien Healthcare in Taneytown.  Born March 5, 1931 in Rockford, IL, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Hildur (Tinberg) Johnson.

          Betty was a Registered Nurse who earned her Bachelors Degree in Nursing at the University of Minnesota, a Masters Degree at the University of Colorado and her PhD in Nursing at the University of Wisconsin.  Betty served as Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of South Carolina.  She also helped establish various nursing programs and participated in organizations overseeing the accreditation of nursing schools throughout the nation.  She was a member of Drott Lodge Swedish heritage organization.

          Surviving are niece, Debra Nelson of Silver Spring, MD and nephews, Tim and Jonathan “Jon” Johnson of Palmyra, PA.  Betty was predeceased by her brother, Ogden Johnson and her sister, Janet Johnson.

          Services are private.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Taneytown.  Memorial contributions in Betty’s name may be made to the University of Virginia at Wise, School of Nursing, 1 College Ave., Wise, VA 24293.
