Sam Bower, 72, of Taneytown, MD passed away on Monday, August 14, 2017 at his home.  Born June 8, 1945 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of the late Frank George and Agnes Mary (Ridinger) Bower.  He was the husband of Ellen Louise (Stauffer) Bower.  They were married for nearly 47 years.

Sam grew up in Harney where he met and married Ellen.  He was a machinist for 40 years, working for various area companies.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War, first in Morocco for a year and a half, then for 2 and a half years aboard the destroyer USS O’Hare as Radioman 3rd Class.  Sam’s hobby was studying the generals of the Civil War.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  He loved the beauty of the earth and, as Sam would say, the CREATURES of this world.

Surviving, in addition to his wife Ellen, are son, Tim Bower of Union Bridge; daughter, Cathi Jo Bower Greene and husband David of Union Bridge; granddaughters, Taylor Elizabeth and Jenna Marie Greene; sisters-in-law, Brenda Dull and husband Brad of Hanover, PA, Diane Bear and husband Jim of Mount Wolf, PA, and Joann Shultz and husband Rick of Orrtanna, PA; brothers-in-law, Randy Stauffer and partner Greg Rinehart of Hanover, PA, Jerry Stauffer and partner Linda Spillman of Littlestown, PA, Norman Stauffer and wife Bonnie of New Oxford, PA, and Marvin Stauffer and girlfriend Jodi Richmond of Littlestown, PA; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Mountain View Cemetery, 5132 Harney Rd., Taneytown, MD, with the Reverend Dr. Peter J. Nashke officiating.  At the family’s request, please plan to arrive by 10:40.  At Sam’s insistence, no suits, ties, or dresses are to be worn.  Casual clothes only, please, with jeans, button-down shirts, and sneakers preferred.  The family requests that Sam’s wishes be honored.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Taneytown.
