George Edward Hobbs

May 20, 1936 ~ January 9, 2017 (age 80) 80 Years Old

George Edward Hobbs, 80, formerly of Thurmont and Taneytown, MD, died peacefully on Monday, January 9, 2017 at Oakland Manor Assisted Living in Sykesville, MD.  Born May 20, 1936 in Pikesville, MD, he was the son of the late Charles and Ruth (Wivell) Hobbs, Sr. He was the husband of the late Maetta Kea (Stambaugh) Hobbs, to whom he was married for 29 years.

George was a Supervisor at Random House in Westminster, retiring after 30 years of service.  He enjoyed gardening, cooking, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  One of George’s greatest joys was performing random acts of kindness for people -- family, friends, and strangers alike.

He is survived by daughters, Deanne Hobbs of Taneytown, and Denise Shriver and husband David of Emmitsburg; brothers, James Hobbs, Sr. of Fairfield, PA, Donald Hobbs and wife Jean of Gettysburg, PA, Pat Hobbs of Taneytown, and Edgar Hobbs and wife Cecilia of Fairfield, PA; sister, Margaret McNair of Laurel; sisters-in-law, Ruth Hobbs of Emmitsburg, and Violet Hobbs of Harney; grandchildren, Kayla Crowl and boyfriend Zach Bair of Westminster, Elizabeth and Jacob Shriver of Emmitsburg, and Stacey Livelsberger of New Oxford, PA; great-grandson, Gavin Brooks; and great-grandson, Baby Austin, who is on the way and expected in April; as well as many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by brothers, Charles, Jr., Francis, and Earl Hobbs; sister, Helen Sanders; sisters-in-law, Alma and Florence Hobbs; and brother-in-law, Charles McNair.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Oakland Manor Assisted Living in Sykesville, and to Liz and Bertie of Carroll Hospice, for the loving care they provided to George.

In the same spirit of his life of service and caring toward others, in death George chose to donate his body for the purpose of medical and scientific research.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg, MD with the Rev. John J. Holliday, C.M. as celebrant.  Inurnment will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD, 21157, or simply perform random acts of kindness to others in George’s honor and memory.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Emmitsburg.
